Dressmaking - All abilities
This is a mixed ability course, suitable for anyone with an interest in dressmaking and sewing.
It could be that you’d like to just gain a few basic skills and a little confidence, or perhaps you require more advanced knowledge. Whatever your level, you are welcome.

If learners are at the start of their sewing journey, they can build a portfolio of samples and
learn new techniques, before embarking upon the production of a simple garment or soft
furnishing item.

If learners already have some knowledge and basic skills, they can liaise with their tutor to
determine what they wish to make.

New learners will:-

- Create samples and learn techniques to assist with garment construction.
- Learn how to take measurements for your chosen project.
- Understand and read patterns and chose the right pattern for your shape.
- Learn how to mark out, cut and construct garments.
- Learn how to select the correct fabric to make a garment.
- Gain knowledge and skills to undertake basic alterations and repairs.
- Learn how to determine how much fabric is required for your chosen fabric.

Please bring:
- A notepad, file for samples, ruler, pens.
- A cotton sheet or a metre of cotton fabric (medium weight) with which to make samples or a
simple bag or cushion.
- Learners will need to purchase their own patterns. If you already have some knowledge, please bring a pattern of your choice. If you are new to dressmaking, please bring a 'basic/easy range' skirt, trouser or PJ pattern' that you would like to construct during the term (please wait until after the first session before purchasing your fabric for this garment as it may be beneficial to chat through the options with your tutor first).
- Sewing tools - thread, spool, hand sewing needles, tape measure, un-picker and a pair of
dressmaking scissors and small hand scissors.

Materials and equipment needed for the rest of the course will be discussed at the first class.
Materials for samples and projects are not provided by the course tutor. Advice and guidance
will be given throughout the course regarding which materials to buy and where to buy these
from.

Learners may bring their own sewing machine if preferred. However, this must be in good working order.
