International Drumming - West African/Cuban/Brazilian
A course designed to introduce learners to the fundamentals of polyrhythmic drumming and the joy and fulfilment that can bring, both for the group and the individual.

Jon specializes in West African rhythms, having trained in Ghana, but also Cuban and Brazilian music. Cultural and traditional rhythms and techniques from these parts of the world will be used to produce exciting and stirring music. Jon will also take time to teach the history and cultural significance of the rhythms, giving context to the music.

As well as Djembe drums, learners will also have the chance to play Ghanaian Kpanlogo drums, Djun Djun bass drums, Congas and a range of Brazilian Samba percussion. Various sticks, bells and shakers will be involved, and a set of drinking cups may also make an appearance! All instruments are provided, but learners are welcome to bring their own drums if they wish.
Over a period of 25 years, Jon has developed his own quite specific sound and style of drumming. One of the aims of the course would be to use the traditional influences of international drumming to compose original pieces and develop a unique character to the music of the group with a view to perform at some point.
